So what exactly is the discount logic here? Why would anyone pay for 10 years in advance?

RUNNER+ mention on Sirius satellite radio Octane 20
April 30th, 2008
I listen to Sirius satellite radio Octane 20 (hard rock) while I’m working and the DJ, Kayla, today mentioned RUNNER+ on the air, and I captured it! Here it is:
Here’s the post at RUNNER+ about it.
New Knight Rider KITT car
January 9th, 2008
NBC’s new Knight Rider show, based on the popular 80’s show, premieres this February 17th. It features the Knight Industries 3000 (KITT) Shelby Ford Mustang GT500KR created in the vein of the original KITT car that Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) kicked around with his big poofy hair.
A friend of mine designed the iconic red lights on the front of KITT just below the front lip of the hood. I’m going to interview him for an exclusive story for my Muscle Car Blog site. Should be a lot of fun!
Here’s the latest 2 minute video about the show:
5 Browsers, 1 OS

This is one of the reasons I’ve switched from Windows to Mac:
As a web developer, it’s essential to be able to test a fresh page in as many browsers and environments as possible.
Play nostalgic Nintendo games… online now!
December 4th, 2007
Remember all those really cool Nintendo classic games like Donkey Kong Jr, Super Mario Bros., and Galaga? Well I do, and those are three of my favorites.
Nintendo8.com now has all of these games online, right now. They are all Flash based. Up until now you had to download an emulator to play on your Mac, PC, PDA, phone, or other device. Finally, someone took the time to figure out how to do it online, technically and legally.
One of my other all-time favorites, Donkey Kong (not Jr.), is not yet available. Someone please let me know if it ever does get added!

I’m in the NY Times today!
November 30th, 2007
Well, I’m not, but one of my sites is!
My sister just called me… turns out her husband, Hank, was reading the New York Times today and came upon an article that mentions RUNNER+! Holy cow… I’m so stoked! I seriously never thought anything I’d do would wind up in the NYT!
I’m going to run out later and pick up a few copies of today’s paper. It’s in section C8. It’s also online:
“Some Essential Hardware (Even Away From the Street)”
The mention is at the bottom of the page:
Hot New Hit on iPod: Every Step You Take
One truism from business school is that you can manage only what you can measure. So it should not be surprising that managers carry that thought into their training regimen.
Nike and Apple make a special digital pedometer that tracks a runner’s footfalls and sends the data to an iPod that stores it for uploading when the user returns home. A runner can keep track of pace and distance over the years. The kit costs $29 if you have the iPod. The transmitter in the shoe adds 0.23 ounce to one foot while the receiver adds 0.12 ounce to the iPod. It interacts with iTunes version 6.0.5 or later.
Lisa Hufnagel, an auditor who travels extensively around New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, says she uses her iPod to track her distance and time while away from home. When she returns, Ms. Hufnagel posts her progress on Runnerplus.com, a social networking site for runners.
Google acquires Jaiku. eBay to buy Twitter?
October 10th, 2007
Now that Google has acquired Jaiku, what does that mean for the even more popular mini-blogging SMS service, Twitter? Well, first I’m surprised that Google acquired Jaiku and not Twitter. I don’t know anyone that uses Jaiku, even though I have mashed it into Runner+. Kind of an odd purchase, actually. So that leaves Twitter open to acquisition.
What about eBay? eBay bought Skype back in 2005 for 2.5 billion, so why not scoop up Twitter for a few poultry million and integrate Twitter in with Skype’s 8+ million users? Then take it another step further and mash Twitter into eBay itself?
Even though Twitter is the best mini-blogging SMS service out there, I’m still frequently annoyed with its downtime and unreliability. It is a service that I’ve always wanted to create on my own, as it’s a fairly simple web application, but I just haven’t had the time.
Review: Web hosted cron job schedulers
September 3rd, 2007
I use DreamHost to host my blog and while it’s a great and fairly inexpensive service, there are some limitations. One is that you cannot run cron jobs without a shell account, which I do not have. A cron job is a frequently executed task, mainly used for running scripts on a frequent basis for website maintenance. While I already do this on my Windows server and I could use it for my needs here at chrisTHIS.com, I wanted to see if there was another way to schedule a cron job for the average Joe Blogger.
I set out looking for web-based cron services and found a few. Here are my reviews of each. None of these are affiliate links, nor am I associated with any of these services. I am providing my honest personal opinions. If you know of more, please let me know!
WordPress mods
August 31st, 2007
I spent the evening “pimping out” my WordPress blog scripts a bit more. I found a cool Flickr badge replacement that is not Flash (shown to the right), added in a plug-in to easily add videos to my blogs, added in my Nike+ run widget, Twitter summary, and perhaps the coolest thing ever: the ability to blog by email/phone with photos.
I first tried the Flickr WordPress integration, but it didn’t work well at all. It did post a blog, but it completely ignored my text and for some reason ended up making 3 posts instead of 1! Weird! I ended up going with a WordPress script called Postie that does the job, and does it extremely well. The only problem I ran into was I don’t have access to cron with my current Unix host, so I found a web-based cron service that was easy to set up and works great.
This means that not only can I now send messages to Twitter using SMS on my iPhone, but now I can also snap a photo and email it to my blog, along with a headline (email subject) and a description (email body). Now that is some cool stuff.

WordPress 2.3.2 and spam protection
January 8th, 2008
The latest WordPress, 2.3.2, frustrates me. It used to be where I could add any plug-in and it would work just fine. A few weeks ago after I upgraded to 2.3.2 I noticed that many of my more interesting plug-ins no longer worked, such as the comment preview plug-in, a few Flickr photo plug-ins, etc. After trying to get them to work on my own without success, I simply de-activated them.
I’m not sure if removing the comment preview plug-in was helping, but now I am getting more comment spam than ever from bots. I’ve tried a few plug-ins documented on the WordPress spam plug-ins page, but nothing seems to really work with 2.3.2. I have tried Did You Pass Math? which did not work (generated an error upon activation), Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin which also did not work (showed the form, but did not enforce the math), as well as Ajax Comments which changed nothing.
I’m not a bozo when it comes to this stuff, or at least I don’t think I am. I am a web developer by profession. I understand PHP and how WordPress works, and all I know is that it’s not working very well these days. I have a ton of plug-ins that I have de-activated because they no longer work with this update.
Is anyone else having problems with WordPress? I am using Akismet for spam protection which works great, but I still have to delete a lot of spam marked as suspect at the end of the day and I’m hoping another plug-in like a math or CAPTCHA question will help.
